How to Back Up Your Excalidraw Task Board
How to Back Up Your Excalidraw Task Board
Since Excalidraw stores data in your browser, you must back up manually to prevent data loss. Follow these steps at least once a week:
Step-by-Step Backup Procedure
- Open your task board at https://excalidraw.com.
- In the top-right menu, click “Export” (🡒 icon).
-
Choose one or both of the following:
-
“Export to .excalidraw” (Recommended for re-editing)
- This saves a file that you can later load back into Excalidraw.
-
“Export to .png / .svg” (Optional for static image backups)
- Useful for sharing or archiving visual snapshots.
-
- Save the file with a clear name, such as:
taskboard_2025-07-09.excalidraw - Upload the file to a shared folder (e.g., Google Drive, OneDrive, Git repo) for your team.
Optional: Shared Link for Collaboration
If you’re using a live collaboration room:
- Click “Live Collaboration” and copy the generated link.
- Save this link in your team’s documentation/chat.
- Note: This link does not provide version history — still export backups regularly.
Important Notes
- Do not rely on your browser to store data across weeks. Local storage can be cleared without warning.
- Make a backup before closing the browser or switching devices.
- Only the
.excalidrawfile format allows full recovery.
